Six Tips To Keep In Mind When You Write Your Story

Here is a list of six tips to keep in mind when writing your story.

1. Break up long sentences and paragraphs to make your words easy to read.

2. Avoid using 'ly' words where you can.

3. Each of your main characters needs a goal.

4. All characters have secrets, use them.

5. In a novel, Don't head hop during a scene. Better to wait until the next scene, or chapter before you switch POV.

6. Conflict is the driving force of the story, make sure you keep readers turning pages.

Happy Friday!

  1. Excellent advice. Thank you Maria x

  2. Just about to edit a 500 word comper. Just the job!

  3. Great advice! I agree with all of that. Happy Friday to you x

  4. Diane - Things I've learnt over the years, both as writer and reader.

Keith - Good luck! Competitions are fun, and make us work to rules, which is never a bad thing.

Enjoy your weekend Teresa, they don't come around quick enough for me!

  5. Have a lovely weekend Maria, and thanks for those pointers. x

  6. Yep. All good things to keep in mind.

I'm doing edits on 3rd book and these things are good to keep in mind while editing too!

  7. Great post. I'd also add, characters don't have to be likeable to be strong characters.

  8. Rebecca - Good point. Thinking Hannibal Lecter, and the joker in Dark Knight, fabulous bad boys!

  9. Always crisp and to the point, Maria - great advice. All good reminders to stick on the post-it note by the tea mug.
I'd also like to offer" 'remember to use all your senses in descriptions'.

  10. Graham - Your senses tip is very valid too. Thank you.

I really appreciate you taking the time to leave me a comment, and I try to reply to every one. Many thanks!
