Goal List Week Commencing 25th November 2012

The Cultural Quarter Leicester - Maria A Smith
November is drawing to a close...and December is almost upon us. I can't believe there is just one month left of this year. I'm starting to think about the next twelve months already.

Making plans is good. I don't know about you, but I have lots to think about, I've got lots of ideas for future projects. I'll talk more on this topic next month.

Last week, I took things easier, I edited another scene from the novel, and got some critique on it, just a few more tweaks and I'll be happy with it.

I did my last stint as the Chair at the Phoenix Writers group on Saturday, its been a busy month, and attendance has been very good. There are some very talented writers in the group, and its been a pleasure to hear their words.

Saturday was busy, and wet, I took the picture above at 4pm, on my way home out of Leicester. The city was glistening with rain. It steadily got worse as the evening wore on, and many rivers around about burst their banks causing a spate of flooding through the county.

This week, I'm mainly resting, and recovering. I may just do the 200 word challenge set by Phoneix Writers group, and leave it at that!

What are you up to?

  1. Hi Maria,

I'm a little embarrassed that I don't recognise Leicester in your photo!

    1. Leicester has changed so much in the last ten years...that area of the city is my favourite, with Curve Theatre, Phoenix Square, and the wonderful Exchange building (on right, in the background)which is a shabby chic bar...the place is buzzing!

Access is just off Charles Street Duncan, maybe it wasn't looking so good last time you were in England.

There is an amazing example of an Art Deco building, as well as a very Gothic looking church in the same patch of the city. I'll try and snap some pictures next time I go to the city.

  2. That's a great picture - I think the person with the umbrella definitely adds to it. The lights make the rain look almost pretty! x

    1. Teresa, let me tell you the circumstances behind this picture. I was running to get out of the rain, and I stopped and looked back. Something in my head thought 'what a great scene' got my phone out, and randomly snapped.

Not the best technically maybe but I love it!

  3. Hi Maria,

My plans have been thwarted by an ear infection, although I had seven ideas lying in bed and managed to dictate them onto my mobile. I felt a little like Dame Barbara Cartland, but if not fir the voice recorder I would have forgotten the ideas!

Excellent idea to record your ideas into the mobile...

  4. I will be panicking! as I have a 30th November competition deadline looming and as usual I've left it to the last few days to finish my work. After that I have promised myself I will take a day off and watch a Christmas film on Saturday and switch off from my writing for a whole day. Ah bliss...

  5. Hi Maria

Great pic - nice to see a photo taken from there that doesn't heavily feature Curve for a change.
I work just up the road at LCB Depot.

Glad to hear the writing's going well too. Your Phoenix Writers group sounds really interesting - is it an open group? I would be interested to find out more.
    Many thanks,

    Wayne.

    1. Hi Wayne,

Thank you, I love the area, I've only been into the LCB Depot a few times, as its not open at the weekends when I'm in the city.
Regarding Phoenix Writers, I will send you some information via email.

  6. Good pic Maria - the lights add to the atmosphere. There is a sense of hurry home to a roaring fire and a Jack Daniels. For me this week - More of the book, blog and weekly writing challenge here. The 'to do' list has reached meltdown, so some tough prioritising necessary. Someone said to me 'You can't live and write.' Its a switchback for sure.

    1. Keith, You're a busy man right now, and yes it is tough prioritising tasks. Keep the faith though...it will be worth it, and you are very close now.

    1. Aww Patsy I'm sorry, and I agree it is too early to be using the 'Christmas' word, or even thinking about it! The tree just happened to be in the scene. :-)

  11. Ooh, I love that picture! It makes Leicester look beautiful, which is not an easy task being rather a hodge-podge of buildings. Glad you're taking it easier and the words are still flowing.

    1. Hi Alex, I quite like the hodgepodge of buildings in the Cultural Quarter...I took the audio tour last year, and learnt quite a bit about the area, which I then incorporated into a creative writers walking tour. It was good fun, and the writers all got a decent story start by the end of the walk.

I am definitely taking it easy this week...

  12. Hello Maria,

It IS a great pic. Made all the more enjoyable by viewing from inside in the dry and warm, lol. Could be used for a christmas card photo competition, I think.

    All the best,
    Debbie W
