Making my Way Back Slowly and Planning for a 'Grab & Go' Year

Winter Walk - Thornton Reservoir, Leicestershire

A lot has happened since I last posted, which has made it very difficult for me to pen any words, I'm not going to talk about it, but I'm here now.

I've missed you dear readers and I've missed blogging.

Going forward I hope to bring you more of my photography, as well as what I hope will be a generous amount of helpful and thought provoking articles on creative writing. As well as lots of inspiring and motivational words too, because many of us could do with a little motivation right now.

Usually at this time of year, I'd sit down with a coffee and notepad and do a bit of mental decluttering - I'd attempt to sort my time, energy and money, in other words I'd organise things more efficiently - not only things I need to do, but also things I want to do and can't seem to afford or get around to doing. Big life changes or small life changes I'd be setting myself quite a few goals.

However, in 2021 I'll be thinking differently, I'm not making a long list, with lots of sub lists, instead I'm focusing on one or two big things for each quarter of the year and then I'll have a couple of smaller achievable monthly goals.

I've jotted stuff down, I have a very short list of big goals and a longer list of smaller achievable things. For example, my first big goal of the year will be focusing on decluttering my home, which will require many different steps. I'm going to call it 'Operation Declutter' and suspect my master plan will get derailed several times, therefore I declare 2021 to be my 'Grab and Go' year!

In other words, when I see an opportunity to get on and realise any part of my plan, I'll grab it and go with it. Let's see what I can achieve as I'm sure it'll have it's highlights and I expect there to be both laughter and tears.

January is a good time to get back on track with health and fitness stuff, which requires focus. So one of my monthly goals is to plan out healthy meal menus and shop and cook accordingly.

I'm also keen to kickstart daily walking again, which is much harder to do on darker days when it's cold outside.

Lastly, I'll definitely be writing in January - predominantly working on this blog to make it the best it can be.

That's definitely enough to be going on with, so to summarize here are my goals.

Quarterly Goal - January/February/March 2021  - Operation Declutter

Monthly Goals for January

Eat healthily.

Daily Walks

Blogging

I'll let you know how I get on.

Do share in the comments if you're setting goals for the new year, or perhaps you're taking a different approach in 2021?

I'm looking forward to reading your replies.

  2. I always have the same goals. Do more yoga and more writing. never seem to get anywhere though. I have a deadline for a competition in January and I've started making notes for another novel which I can't start writing until I've finished at least this draft of my work in progress. I've been concentrating on my reading goals too. Best wishes for 2021, May you achieve your goals and enjoy.

    1. Hi Jen,

Good luck with your goals, it's tricky isn't it, and I agree some of mine are the same as in previous years. What are we like!

I'm going back to an old fashioned diary, Making appointments with myself so that I know when I should be doing things. A plan of sorts to get me on track, then a review meeting with myself on Saturday and a new plan on Sunday. WISH ME LUCK!

  4. Welcome back to blogging, Maria. It’s been a strange year, hasn’t it. I would have thought lockdown would help me write and blog - what else was there to do? Instead, I felt strangely paralysed and unable to concentrate on anything. Anyway, I’m not sure what has been going on in your life, but I’ve had major upheaval in my life too. Wishing you all the best for 2021. Onward and upward! x

    1. Ruth, I feel your angst, so many creatives have struggled, I hope you're able to find yourself again soon. All the very best wishes for the future.

  5. Shall we all agree that 2020 has been awful for everyone, in varying degrees? I hope things begin to improve for you now. I love the philosophy of Grab & Go. There was a piece on the BBC website recently offering suggestions on how to survive the winter months and one of them was 'to do things badly'; in other words, if you wait for the perfect moment, you'll never get anything done - so just get on with it. I look forward to sharing happy milestones with you in the year ahead.

    1. 'To do things badly' makes me smile because from experience I just know there will be some things I do badly. However, that's okay because it's better to try and fail, than not to try at all! I shall definitely just be getting on with it.
      Happy New Year!

  6. Oh how LOVELY to see a post from you, I really am delighted. I haven't written down any goals yet, which is unusual for me. I think the problem is I'm not sure how long the things I want to do will take (editing three first drafts). So it's hard to plan. But I'm also aiming to be healthier and get more exercise. I've got Dr Rangan Chatterjee's book Better in 5 from the library and that's really inspiring. I should probably write some goals down though. Anyway, I'm wishing you a wonderful New Year. CJ xx

    1. I'm equally delighted to find you here too CJ, perhaps we can swap ideas on how to be healthier? I've got Dr Chatterjee's earlier books and they are excellent so I expect his new one to be a good read too. Definitely write some goals down. At least one for January.
      Happy New Year!

    2. Maria, yes, great idea. I want to do some strength training this year. Actually picked up some dumb bells at Aldi today. I'm definitely going to write down some goals. And revisit last year's and see what I achieved! CJ xx

    3. Dumb bells! Wow, you are seriously going to smash fitness if you start using them on a regular basis.
I've got to build up from scratch! Might have to do a few fitness videos to get motivated.

  8. Welcome back. I love the idea of having goals mapped out for the year, but I'd rebel and end up with nothing productive.

Having said that, my general plans for 2021 are all writing based, so they depend on a lot of other people saying 'yes' to achieve them.

    Happy New Year x

  9. Good to see you blogging again Maria, and the new design is fab, very eye-catching.

I will be decluttering too, as I have a filing cabinet to move into place, and hopefully my office will begin to be tidier.

    Happy New Year. x

  10. Thank you Carol, I'm still not sure about the design, but we'll see how we get on with it. It is going to depend on how user friendly it is for my readers as well as how well I can get used to operating the blog.
